John Steinbeck, “Travels with Charley”

A rugged and passionate adventure of self-identity

Travels with Charley: In Search of America is a 1962 travelogue written by American author John Steinbeck. It depicts a 1960 road trip around the United States made by Steinbeck with his standard poodle Charley.

He felt that he might have lost touch with its sights, sounds and the essence of the American people. A rugged and passionate adventure of self-identity, Steinbeck’s vision of the changing world still speaks to us prophetically through the decades.

John Ernst Steinbeck (1902-1968) was an American novelist, best known for The Grapes of Wrath (1939), which summed up the bitterness of the Great Depression decade and aroused widespread sympathy for the plight of migratory farmworkers. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature for 1962.
