One of the most unusual works of nineteenth-century fiction

Dead Souls is a novel by Nikolai Gogol, first published in 1842, and widely regarded as an exemplar of 19th-century Russian literature. The novel chronicles the travels and adventures of Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov and the people whom he encounters, and it is one of the most unusual works of nineteenth-century fiction and a devastating satire on social hypocrisy.

Translated by D. J. Hogarth.

Nikolai Gogol (1809-52) was born in the Ukraine and left for St Peterburg at the age of 19 where he published a collection of short stories and for a short time held the post of professor of history at the university.
