Mary E. Bradley Lane, “Mizora: A Prophecy”

A pioneering feminist utopia—bold, brilliant, and deeply conflicted

First serialized in the Cincinnati Commercial (1880-1881) and published in book form in 1890, Mizora follows Russian exile Vera Zarovitch into a hidden, all-female civilization inside the Earth. In Mizora, chemistry replaces agriculture, teachers are society’s elite, weather is engineered, and poverty is unknown. Lane’s women reproduce by parthenogenesis, creating a society without men—and raising timeless questions about technology, equality, and the price of “perfection.” Long overlooked, Mizora is now recognized as one of the earliest portraits of a self-sufficient female society and a cornerstone of feminist speculative fiction.

Mary E. Bradley Lane (1844-1930) was a U.S. schoolteacher and author. Little is known of her life beyond Mizora, which first ran in newspaper serial and was later issued in book form with a prefatory note by editor Murat Halstead. Today the novel stands as a landmark—both for its daring faith in education and science, and for the troubling eugenic ideas it inherits from its time.
