J.R.R. Tolkien, “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring”

The first volume of the epic novel–One of the most successful novels in publishing history

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first of three volumes of the epic novel The Lord of the Rings by the English author J. R. R. Tolkien (1892-1973). It is followed by The Two Towers and The Return of the King. The action takes place in the fictional universe of Middle-earth. The book was first published on 29 July 1954 in the United Kingdom. The three-part work forms a sequel to Tolkien’s The Hobbit (1937) and constitutes one of the most successful novels in publishing history. The book describes a battle of good against evil, of kindness and trust against suspicion, and of fellowship against the desire for individual power. The enduring fascination of the mythology of Middle-earth can be seen in the success of the film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), directed by Peter Jackson, and in the plethora of dictionaries, encyclopaedias, and games based on Tolkien’s works.
