Matthew Phipps Shiel, “The Purple Cloud”

-A pioneer in the genre of apocalyptic novels. First edition text (1901)

The Purple Cloud is an apocalyptic novel published in 1901 (revised 1929). H. G. Wells lauded The Purple Cloud as ‘brilliant’ and H. P. Lovecraft later praised the novel as exemplary weird fiction, ‘delivered with a skill and artistry falling little short of actual majesty.’

The story is about a man, Adam Jeffson on a polar expedition who discovers a mysterious and deathly Purple Cloud. In the wake of the massive global deaths wrought by the Purple Cloud, Jeffson becomes ruler of the world and builds a huge palace to his glory. He meets a young woman and the two become the heirs to the future of humanity.

Matthew Phipps Shiell (1865-1947), known as M. P. Shiel, was a British writer. He is remembered mainly for supernatural horror and scientific romances. His work was published as serials, novels, and as short stories. The Purple Cloud remains his most often reprinted novel.
