“imagination of a very high order to see that machinery could be dangerous as well as useful”—George Orwell

Erewhon was first published anonymously in 1872, set in a fictional country discovered and explored by the protagonist: Erewhon. ‘Erewhon’ is an anagram for “nowhere.” The novel is one of the first to explore ideas of artificial intelligence. As the unnamed narrator further examines the institutions of Erewhon, his illusions of utopia and eternal progress are stripped away.

George Orwell praised the book and said that when Butler wrote Erewhon it needed “imagination of a very high order to see that machinery could be dangerous as well as useful.”

Samuel Butler (1835-1902) was an English author, literary critic, philosopher, painter and translator of Homer.
