Karen Blixen, “Seven Gothic Tales”

Seven exquisite tales combining the keen psychological insight characteristic of the modern short story with the haunting mystery of the nineteenth-century Gothic tale

Originally published in 1934, Seven Gothic Tales, the first book by “one of the finest and most singular artists of our time” (The Atlantic), is a modern classic. Here are seven exquisite tales combining the keen psychological insight characteristic of the modern short story with the haunting mystery of the nineteenth-century Gothic tale, in the tradition of writers such as Goethe, Hoffmann, and Poe.

“Although solidly set in an admirably described factual background somewhere on the same globe we inhabit, in a past mostly no longer ago than sometime in the nineteenth century, although they are human beings, young men, maidens, old men, old women, they are unlike us and the people we know in books and in real life, because the attitude towards life which they have is different from ours, or from any attitude we have met in life or in books …”— Dorothy Canfield

Karen Blixen (1885-1962) was an eminent twentieth century Danish writer who wrote under several pen names including Isak Dinesen, Pierre Andrézel and Osceola. Her best-known works include Seven Gothic Tales, Out of Africa and Babette’s Feast.
