In the remote Russian province–a village, a lake, birch forests, fields fading into the horizon–comes from Moscow a wealthy landowner, Count Karneev, who disrupts the monotonous life of the community, and especially that of Kamysev, an examining magistrate who is his friend. Amid orgies, horseback riding, and Gypsy music, both find themselves violently attracted to Ol’ga, the young daughter of the forester, who, though she ends up marrying the count’s steward, will become as much a lover of one as the other. The story–initially a Bovary-style drama–is tinged with the dark hues of tragedy when Ol’ga is mysteriously murdered: only at the end, in an excellent “detective story” crescendo, will the culprit be discovered thanks to an unexpected twist.
The Shooting Party, however, is also an open-air laboratory in which we recognize figures, images, and situations that through slow maturation will flow into the major work.
