Mervyn Peake (1911–1968). Born in China to a missionary doctor, Mervyn Peake was a painter, illustrator and poet before he became a novelist. His Gormenghast novels, beginning with Titus Groan (1946), created one of the most extraordinary imaginary worlds in English literature. His illustrations for Alice in Wonderland and Treasure Island are still admired today.
